A Nação Hebraica header graphic

A Nação, The Nation, was the name used by Portuguese Jewish communities in the Early Modern period. Taking our inspiration from this, A Nação Hebraica undertakes scholarly research into the history and genealogy of the communities that make up the Western Sephardic diaspora in the Atlantic world.

Our aim is to identify and make available original source documents, materials and research, and to publish these in databases or physical publications, in order to inform and educate a worldwide public.

Our collections began with transcriptions of the earliest Annual Accounts of the Spanish & Portuguese Jews’ Congregation in London beginning in 5436 (1676) and continues with other documents from the Bevis Marks Archives including Ascamot, Minute Books, and Books of Disputes. Transcriptions of documents from other communities including Amsterdam, Livorno, and Gibraltar are added when completed.
